BANNED BOOKS WEEK!

This week is BANNED BOOKS WEEK - When we celebrate your freedom to read whatever you want!

We believe that only you and your parents should be able to dictate what you can and cannot read. But some people try to make that decision for you and will challenge books to have them banned or removed from a library.

A CHALLENGE is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A BANNING is the removal of those materials.

Dave Pilky, author of the Captain Underpants series has created a fun video about Banning Books:

YESSUR! I SAW THE FAULT IN OUR STARS LAST NIGHT!

AND IT WAS AWESOME!

To make a long story short, I got to go see an advanced screening of The Fault in Our Stars last night!

And let me tell you, IT WAS AWESOME!
I'm always super nervous about seeing a film adaptation of a book I LOVE.  It's scary, you know?  They often screw it up.  But this is, by far, one of the best film adaptations I've ever seen.  They totally did the story and characters justice!

And, to top it off....the director and JOHN GREEN were there!
John Green and the director came in to the theater to introduce the film and then finished it off with a fun Q&A session.  The session was live streamed, and you can see it here.

And after the film we were invited outside to egg a car with John Green!
Here's my video footage:

CLASSICS RETELLINGS!

Presenting YA RETELLINGS – an epic chart brought to you by Epic Reads. Read your way through this list of 162 young adult books that are retellings or re-imaginings of popular classic literature, myths, fariy tales and Shakespearean plays.  Click on the chart to visit the Epic Reads site!

Fun facts about this chart:

Fun Fact #1: There are 162 books in total on this list. Yes, there are more YA retellings out there that we probably missed or couldn’t find, but this was the most our community could find!
Fun Fact #2: They are all young adult books, but some might fall into the “crossover” category with either adult or middle grade.
Fun Fact #3: There are 40 classic lit retellings, 74 fairy tale retellings, 30 mythology retellings and 18 Shakespeare retellings.
Fun Fact #4: The author featured most times on this list is Cameron Dokey with 5 books!
Fun Fact #5: This chart took about 4 months of planning and research, 4 weeks of designing and 8 hours to compose the actual post you’re reading here.
Fun Fact #5: There are 68 different colors used in the circles and lines in the design!

HOLY SMOKES, IT'S HERE!!!

OK, this post has two "It's Here!"s:

1) This Star Won't Go Out - Now that you've read (and fallen in love with) The Fault In Our Stars...meet Esther who was a real-life NERD FIGHTER and inspired Hazel's character.  This book is a collection of the journals, fiction, letters, and sketeches of the late Esther Grace Earl, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 16.  Photographs and essays by family and friends will help to tell Esther's story along with an introduction by award-winning author John Green who dedicated his #1 bestselling novel The Fault in Our Stars to her (BP).
HCMS library has 5 copies; so come and check one out today!

2) The Fault In Our Stars official movie trailer is OUT!!!!  HOLY MOLY!
Ok, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book.  And like any book I love, am wicked scared of the movie.  Because we all know that film makers tend to screw it all up.  But I am definitely going to go see this movie because:

A) John Green gave his blessing and spent pretty much every day on the set.  We know he'd kick some bootay (or at least be producing some hater Nerd
Fighter YouTube videos) if things were not accurately portrayed.  So I trust him.

B) I love Shaileen Woodley.  I think she's going to do right by Hazel Grace Lancaster.  And whoo, Ansel Elgort makes for a pretty dang good Augustus.

BINGO!

Man, I LOVE playing BINGO!  And there's no better feeling than to be the first one to call out, "BINGO!"

So here's a New Year's Challenge for you...It's still considered New Year's, right?!  We're still in the first month of the year!

Random House created 2 printable bingo cards with 24 reading challenges! Join us and challenge yourself to read more, to read more widely and to have fun doing it all!  Which card are you going to try your hand at? The original Reading Bingo 2014 card? The YA card? Both? Let us know in the comments.
You can approach the Reading Bingo card however you like: beginners, start by getting one line; if you’re more advanced, try the whole outside box on the card; experts, fill in the whole card!  So save a BINGO card to your iPad and use an annotation app to keep track of your squares.  Or kick it Old School and print it out.
We would recommend using one book per space, but if you read a book over 500 pages written by someone under 30, who are we to stop you from covering two squares with one read?
Once you get a BINGO!, come and see us in the library for a super de duper prize!
Happy Reading!
